Gear pumps are renowned for their compact design and simple operation, which are achieved with a small number of moving parts. Despite not being able to match the high-pressure output of reciprocating pumps or the flow rates of centrifugal pumps, they fare better than vane or lobe pumps in terms of throughput and pressure generation. This makes gear pumps an ideal choice for pumping fluids with high viscosity, especially oils.

External gear pumps have the advantage of sustaining higher pressures (up to 3000 psi) and flow rates due to their rigid shaft support and closer tolerances. On the other hand, internal gear pumps excel in suction capabilities and are ideal for handling high viscosity fluids, with an operating range from 1cP to over 1,000,000cP. Gear pumps are frequently used for metering and blending operations as their output is directly proportional to rotational speed. Additionally, gear pumps can be customized to handle aggressive liquids by using materials such as cast iron, stainless steel, or new alloys and composites. This allows them to effectively handle corrosive substances like sulphuric acid, sodium hypochlorite, ferric chloride, and sodium hydroxide.
