A crucial factor for the efficient operation of a negative suction pump is ensuring that the normal water level is in close proximity to the pump volute centerline. The NPSH, priming ability, and susceptibility to cavitation are directly influenced by the distance of the water level below the pump. In cases where the water level is significantly lower, centrifugal pumps struggle to operate as the suction line losses, including negative head or suction lift and friction losses, approach the equivalent of one atmosphere. This limitation arises when the vapor pressure of the liquid reaches atmospheric pressure, preventing the pump from effectively lifting the fluid. An instance where this problem occurred was with our large temporary bypass sewage pumps, which were positioned 24 feet above the fluid level. Unfortunately, these pumps experienced severe cavitation, leading to their inefficiency and failure.


To avoid the suction line from running dry, there are several ways to ensure that it remains water-filled. These methods include using a priming mechanism, an eductor, a vacuum pump, or a foot valve in the suction line. One effective approach we've used is the venturi-style eductors, which work by drawing a vacuum using high-pressure service water to maintain the pump volute full. Another reliable solution suggested in Marks' Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers is to employ a priming chamber. By embracing these methods, the suction line is guaranteed to remain filled with water, ensuring the smooth operation of the pump.
