When a butterfly valve is at a mid-opening degree, the valve body and the front end of the butterfly plate create an opening shape that is centered on the valve shaft. This arrangement causes different conditions on both sides of the valve. On one side, the front end of the butterfly plate moves in the same direction as the flowing water, resembling a nozzle-like opening. On the other side, the front end of the butterfly plate moves against the direction of the flowing water, creating a throttle-like opening. Consequently, the flow rate on the nozzle side is significantly faster than the throttle side, which can result in negative pressure under the throttle side valve. This negative pressure may cause the rubber seal to detach.
The operating torque of a butterfly valve varies depending on the opening and closing directions of the valve. A horizontal butterfly valve, particularly one with a large diameter, exhibits a torque difference due to the water head discrepancy between the upper and lower ends of the valve shaft. This discrepancy should not be ignored. Furthermore, when an elbow is installed on the inlet side of the valve, it creates a bias flow, which increases the torque experienced by the valve. In situations where the valve is in the middle opening, the operating mechanism must be self-locking to counteract the torque exerted by the water flow.
